The Most Effective Way To Protect Your Kansas City Restaurant From Cockroaches

Cockroaches are one of the most common pests to invade Kansas City restaurants. These hard-shelled interlopers are insect invaders of the worst possible kind.

The spread of diseases, consumption of foods, and scaring of guests is only part of the reason why cockroaches are such a dangerous bug in any eatery’s backyard.

There are over 3,500 species of cockroaches found worldwide. In the United States, that number dwindles down to about 55. Thankfully, that number drops even lower in Kansas State, where the weather is less conducive to picky roach species. Around the Kansas City area, there are only three cockroach species that restaurant owners need to protect against. These roach species include:

  • German cockroaches
  • Oriental cockroaches
  • American cockroaches

As many restaurant owners are well aware, cockroaches living within a kitchen can spell disaster long before a problem is discovered. Left to their own devices, cockroaches may:

  • Spread serious and even life-threatening diseases, including salmonella, E. coli, streptococcus, and even bacterial staph infections.
  • Instigate severe allergic reactions in susceptible victims, and worsen the symptoms of asthma.
  • Rapidly increase their numbers through rampant reproduction.
  • Damage food containers, wallpaper, boxes, and other items by chewing through cardboard and certain glue compounds.

If cockroaches are left to run amok for any amount of time, the consequences to commercial establishments will be dire. The sighting of just a single cockroach can be enough to shut down a restaurant.

Why Restaurants Are So Appealing To Kansas City Cockroaches

The cockroach species found in Kansas City have a particular love for restaurants, and for good reason. Cockroaches love standing water, which many restaurants unconsciously house in their kitchens, bathrooms, and storage areas. Restaurants generate a large amount of food and garbage. This creates easy access to food sources in unprotected establishments. To combat the devastating effects of cockroach activity in restaurants or food service buildings, managers and owners are advised to heed the following prevention advice:

  • Store trash properly both inside and outside the restaurant.
  • Seal vulnerable food items in strong bags, bins, or other pest-proof containers.
  • Remove standing water in kitchens, bathrooms, or other chronic spaces by using dehumidifiers or desiccant bags. Repair any leaks or damage that could be contributing to the problem.
  • Clean and sweep often. It is a common myth that cockroaches are only attracted to dirty spaces. That being said, less tidy areas may allow bugs to breed and thrive with relative ease.
